My favorite time of year is right around the corner. Although fall doesn’t technically begin until September 22nd, the unofficial start in my world is always right after Labor Day. It’s when all the kids go back to school and the tourists finally leave our beaches. It’s still warm but I can definitely feel a difference in the air. It’s cooler, less humid. The sun disappears a smidge earlier each day and the leaves are slowly changing and falling. I’ve loved the fall season for as long as I can remember. I’m in an instantly better mood the minute I smell pumpkin spice and can step outside without being suffocated from the heat and humidity.
Having a dog in the fall is even more awesome. I highly recommend checking out my Fall Bucket List for Pet Parents to make the most of the season. Here are my top ten reasons why fall is irresistible for dogs.
1. Afternoon Walks
This should actually just say “more walks.” I swear during the summer I tend to hibernate on those disgusting hot days. I can’t stand it. If I can’t stand it, I know Chuy is struggling too. There’s nothing worse than walking your dog when it’s 99 degrees with 90% humidity. Once the cool air arrives, I can’t stand staying indoors! This means more exercise for Chuy and myself! Trust me, at eight months pregnant I could use it right now!
2. Fall Sunsets
The sunsets in the fall are just prettier. More vibrant. All of those colors, pink, purple, red, and orange come together in a way that can’t be copied in any other season. I love ending a dog walk with a pretty sunset.
3. Trips to the Pumpkin Patch & Farmer’s Market
I LOVE going to the pumpkin patch with Chuy. Every year we pick out our pumpkins and Chuy always gets a “Chuy sized” pumpkin for our front porch. Plus, I love looking at all the fall goodies at the Farmer’s Market like apples, corn, and cider!
4. Pumpkin Flavored Dog Treats
Yup, I’m that person that gets the Pumpkin Spice Latte fan pass. Pumpkin is also healthy for dogs and it is one of Chuy’s favorites. Here are some of our favorite pumpkin dog treat recipes.
5.Crunchy Leaves
My husband always laughs at me when I do this. I love the sound of crunchy leaves under my feet. Yup, I’ll go out of my way on a walk with Chuy just to crunch the leaves with my boots.
6. The Apple Orchard
We don’t have an apple orchard close to our home but we went to Carter Mountain Orchard outside of Charlottesville, VA a few years ago. It was so much fun and it’s dog friendly! The closest thing we get to an apple orchard in Virginia Beach is picking up apples at the Farmer’s Market.
7. Halloween
Ever since I was a kid Halloween has been my favorite holiday. I am obsessed! I love everything about Halloween. Including dressing Chuy up in a new costume. I love Halloween so much that my wedding was October 30th, 2010 and our reception was a Masquerade ball. Everyone keeps asking me if I planned the timing of my daughters birth and the answer is no. She is due the same week as Halloween and our anniversary. Let’s just say it’s meant to be!

8. Hoodie Weather
I love fall fashion. My fall “uniform” pretty much consists of leggings, boots, and some kind of sweater or long tunic. I love layering. In the summer, fashion is so limited because it’s too hot for anything. For dogs, this means dog sweaters and hoodies. Chuy’s favorite one is his Halloween hoodie we got years ago.
9. No More Tourists
We live in what’s considered a “resort city.” Virginia Beach gets so crowded with tourists during the summer. Plus, in the summer months no dogs are allowed on the public beaches. Boo! All of this changes after Labor Day. It’s when the locals get to take back our beaches and enjoy them with our dogs . . .while it’s not super hot.
10. I Just Love Fall!
Plain and simple. I LOVE everything about fall!
