If you haven’t noticed, Summer time is here. I think we pretty much skipped past Spring and were thrown right into the Summer heat. Especially if you live on the east coast like Chuy and I. It’s just barely Memorial Day and it’s hitting 90 degrees during our morning walk at 8am! Wow!
Heartworm Disease is NOT Irresistible!
It brings up the topic of protecting your Irresistible Pet against the threat of Heartworms. I live in Virginia Beach and I can pretty much bet on coming home with a mosquito bite or two after our evening walks here. That means that Chuy Chihuahua is probably getting a few himself. Heartworms are caused by mosquitos and the disease has been reported in all 50 states. However, as you can tell in the map provided by the American Heartworm Society, the majority of cases are on the East Coast.
Being that Chuy is a 7 lb Chihuahua (6 lbs on a good day), he is very sensitive to everything that goes into his little body. We’ve tried multiple medications for heartworms, flea, and ticks and have had a time. I just gave him the 6th pill in his pack of Wormshield. You can only order these from a Banfield Pet Hospital. This is the first time he hasn’t thrown it up. Yay! Normally I put them inside of a Greenies Pill Pocket. He loves those! But, I’m thinking perhaps the combination of the pocket and the pill might have given him a bad reaction. This time around I put the Wormshield inside of his favorite treat, Little Jacs!
It’s been almost 24 hours and no vomitting. Normally, he would through up by now.
I’m not sure if I’ll order these again since he got sick 5 out of 6 times. Not good! My vet did recomend trying Heartguard Plus, which you can order on 1-800 Pet Meds. I order on there quite often and I like that anything over $39 qualifies for free shipping!
