As I was sitting putting together some deals Thursday night, I noticed that something just wasn’t right with Chuy.
He couldn’t jump up in my chair and when I went to pick him up, he let out a horrible yelping sound. Then, I noticed that he couldn’t lay down or get comfortable. So we started to think he had injured his legs.
BUT, his stomach also felt rock hard and seemed swollen. So by now, my husband and I are really confused and worried.
After about 10 minutes of observing him and not being able to see him in this much pain, we packed up and headed to the emergency vet hospital. Of course these things always happen after hours! Why??!?
They checked him in, took vitals, and recommended full x-rays. The vet had a feeling it was actually not his stomach or his legs but his BACK! What?!
Based on the vet’s expertise and the x-rays, they diagnosed him with a “possible” bulging disk in his back. Are you serious?! I never in a million years thought this could happen to dogs! But, I guess I never really thought about it!
So, the hard stomach was from him being in pain and tensing up from the back pain. The legs appearing to be in pain were obviously from him not wanting to put pressure on them because of the back pain. Duh, why didn’t I know this? Oh yea, I have a degree in HR/Communications not Veterinary Science! LOL
They gave him a shot of some feel good stuff and loaded him up with 3 prescriptions to take home, a pain-killer, anti-inflammatory, and a muscle relaxer. This was Chuy, sound asleep once we got home!
They also put him on a strict no activity routine for 2-4 weeks. No steps, no walks, no jumping, etc. That is going to so hard for my little Chuy!
So, that means more crate time and we had to invest in this puppy gate for our steps!
So, how the heck did this happen anyways? Well, Chuy gets on our bed all the time. We have a bench that sits at the end of our bed. He jumps on the bench and then jumps on our bed. Right before I noticed him acting funny, he had missed the bench when trying to jump up. I felt awful because I didn’t think twice about it because he’s done it before. So, our theory is that’s when he must have actually hurt himself. I’ve been really upset with myself but I guess there was nothing I could’ve done to prevent it either way.
So, now we are looking to invest in some steps or a ramp for the bed once he is better and doesn’t have to be carried every where.
I was so heart broken seeing my baby boy in pain. I’m just so happy to see him doing better!
Thanks for stopping by friends!
