I shared a post back in January about how my binge eating disorder has made Chuy an overweight dog. It’s hard enough struggling with my own weight issues, so when the vet officially declared Chuy as overweight, I was devastated. I knew he was looking a little chunky but actually hearing this from a professional made it sting. It made me feel like I wasn’t a good enough pet parent and that I allowed my bad habits to become part of my pet’s lifestyle. I haven’t checked in on this specific topic in awhile so I wanted to share what I am doing to get Chuy back on track to a healthy lifestyle.
Admitting is the First Step
Admitting there is a problem is always the hardest thing to do. Am I right? It isn’t easy to admit that your pet is overweight and that you are partly to blame for that. However, admitting there is a problem and then creating a plan of attack is half the battle! After I started doing some research, I realized that Chuy and I are not alone in the battle of the bulge! Here are a few of the statistics I found:
- In the US, 53% of dogs and 55% of cats are now overweight or obese.
- Over the last five years the incidence of overweight or obese dogs has increased by almost 40% in the US.
- Over the same time period the number of overweight or obese cats has increased by an astonishing 90%.
So how did we get here? Chuy is the king of giving you “the look” when we are eating dinner. I, like many other pet parents was raised with the “food is love” mentality so I naturally passed that on to Chuy. It’s so hard to not give him an extra treat or a piece of human food when he gives you those irresistible puppy dog eyes! Now that I’m educated about overweight dogs, I can put together a plan to get Chuy back into a healthy lifestyle.
A New Feeding Plan with Hill’s® Prescription Diet® Metabolic Advanced Weight Solution
After much thought and discussion with our vet about Chuy’s weight, she recommended that we put him on Hill’s® Prescription Diet® Metabolic Advanced Weight Solution. Hill’s® Prescription Diet® Metabolic Advanced Weight Solution is clinically proven nutrition that naturally activates metabolism to burn fat and regulate appetite. If you are on the fence about whether or not this food will work for your pet, I recommend checking out the video, One Big Kitty.
Chuy’s Weight Loss Plan
The vet printed out a chart from Hill’s that shows us Chuy’s starting weight and his goal weight. He weighed in at 11.5 lbs and the vet wants him down to 8.5 lbs. It doesn’t seem like much but when you’re a Chihuahua every ounce counts! They also gave us a sheet with how much to feed Chuy. I’ve been feeding him 1/3 cup in the morning and 1/3 at dinner. In the past, we had an issue with Chuy not eating his food when we would give it to him. Since we started the Metabolic diet, he eats every last piece when he gets his food!
Stay Tuned and Watch Our Progress!
Chuy and I both are on a journey to a healthier lifestyle. I just wish I had someone that portioned out my food every day and didn’t let me near the fridge! A girl can dream, right?! According to Hill’s, 88% of pets lost weight in two months at home with no major changes other than eating the food.
However, Chuy and I are going to step it up a bit and try to get in daily walks outside now that it’s actually warming up! Each month we will share our weight loss progress with you. Even though we haven’t officially weighed Chuy since he started his diet, I can tell he’s lost weight. His neck appears thinner and his waist line is coming back!
