Nutrition Tips for Senior Cats - Hills Science Diet

Cats, like people, are living longer than ever before. In fact, many cats live well into their teens. In human years, that’s older than 70! We all want our pets to have long, happy, fulfilled lives. Let’s talk about how nutrition can contribute to a longer lifespan for your cat.

1. Avoid Overfeeding Your Senior Cat

Portion control is the key to prevent overfeeding your cat and making sure they don’t gain weight. Use a measuring cup to portion out your cats meals based on the feeding recommendations on the cat food bag or based on your veterinarians advice. Overfeeding leads to obesity and obesity can lead to numerous health problems and may shorten your cat’s life.

2. Feed Your Senior Cat Several Meals a Day

Some older cats do better with several small meals per day instead of one or two large meals. To ease digestion, consider feeding your cat several meals a day instead of one large serving. Check with your vet to determine a proper feeding regimen.

3.Choose a Senior Cat Food Diet

Did you know that at age 7 a cat’s nutritional needs change from adult to mature adult? Once they reach 11 or more years, they are considered a senior cat. This doesn’t mean your cat is “old” it just means it’s time to adjust their food to one that meets their nutritional needs at this stage of life.

Our friends at Hill’s know nutrition, and they know cats! Their research and studies have guided them to make an array of foods for mature adult cats that will give your cat the nutrition she needs to help lengthen the quality time you have with your cat.
