Pregnant in the summer is tough. Pregnant in what feels like the hottest summer of my life sucks! Last year, I lived in my kayak and I’ve still been able to enjoy it a few times this year. BUT, I get tired more easily and let’s be real, I’m terrified of mosquitoes with all the talk about the Zika virus. On the other hand, the last thing I feel like doing is sitting around the house all day but sometimes my body tells me otherwise. “This is temporary” is my mantra that I keep repeating.
On Sunday, we decided to take a random mini road trip up the Eastern Shore of Virginia. It’s only an hour away but helps to break up the same old/same old while getting out of the house! Do you put your dog in a car seat when doing a road trip in the car? Chuy doesn’t care much for it but it’s really important for his safety!
To get to the Eastern Shore, you must cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. There is a $15 toll each way (ouch!) so that keep that in mind. They will give you a seagull shaped dog treat if your dog is in the car! It’s hard to tell but yes that’s supposed to be a seagull!
Once we crossed the bridge we stopped at the rest area so Chuy could take a break and stretch his legs.
If you want some “real” seafood and you’re traveling with a dog, I recommend the Great Machipongo Clam Shack. It used to be a McDonald’s and that’s what makes it such a dive spot. They didn’t try to hide the fact that it was an old Mickey D’s!
They have a drive thru which is really convenient but there are long wait times during the summer. I’ve been in the winter and it’s only like a 5-10 minute wait. This past weekend, we had to wait over 30 minutes!
We ended up driving all the way to Chincoteague which is a small island well known for its wild ponies. This is the week of the famous pony pinning.
We didn’t get to see any of the ponies this time because Chuy was with us. There are no pets allowed inside of the Chincoteague National Refuge. That’s right . . . pets are not even allowed in the car. Boo!
However, we did get to drive around the small town and stopped to walk around a bit. Every single picture of Chuy has his tongue out because it was way too hot!
On the way home we stopped in Cape Charles (right before the Bay Bridge) at the Sunset Beach Resort. They have a restaurant right on the beach called The Jackspot. It’s pet friendly which is a plus!
We had a bite to eat and enjoyed the sunset before heading back home to Virginia Beach.

What a beautiful place to visit! I can’t imagine how difficult it must be as a pregnant person to get through this heat. Stay strong, you’ve got this! 🙂 Chuy looks like he had a great time out on the water with you. 🙂
