Everything old is new again. Especially tie dye. I’ve been seeing tie dye every where lately! I decided to hop on the trend and make Chuy a patriotic shirt for July 4th. In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how easy it is to make your own shirt with Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye. Head on over to the Tie Dye Your Summer website for more ideas and inspiration! This is the perfect project to do with your friends and family outdoors this Summer! You’ll also want to check out our matching DIY Tie Dye Beach Bag!
Supplies
- Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye (Kit includes plastic gloves and rubber bands)
- Plain Dog Shirt
- Plastic wrap
- Plastic table cloth (Dollar Tree has them!)
Instructions – DIY Tie Dye Dog Shirt
These are the instructions based on my experience. For more information, tips, and tutorials, check out the Tie Dye Your Summer website.
1. Prep Your Work Area
Set up your work surface by laying down a disposable table cloth or some plastic trash bags. It’s preferable to do this craft outside so that you don’t stain your carpet or kitchen table! We did this outdoors on my patio table.
2. Prep the Fabric
I recommend prepping your fabric before mixing the dye. You’ll need to decide what type of pattern or design you want to go with. The Tie Dye Your Summer website has TONS of ideas if you aren’t sure! Depending on what you go with you’ll need to wrap the shirt with the rubber bands that come in your tie dye kit. Here’s how I tied Chuy’s shirt.
3. Mix the Tie Dye
One of the awesome things about the Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye kit is that it comes with plastic gloves which you will definitely need. Put those bad boys on and add some warm water to each bottle and give it a good shake.
4. Dye the Fabric
Now the fun begins! For a Patriotic look, I dyed every other section red and blue.
5. Wrap it Up!
Once you are finished dying, you’ll need to wrap your dog shirt with plastic wrap and allow it to sit for 6-8 hours. For more intense color, let it sit out longer.
6. Rinse
Once 6-8 hours have passed, rinse out the shirt with water until the water runs clear.
7. Wash
To set in the color, you’ll need to put the shirt into the washer machine by itself with a tiny bit of detergent. Do not wash it with any other items!!
No two pieces of tie dye are going to look the same. Don’t worry about getting it perfect. Just have fun! Once completed, your DIY Patriotic Tie Dye Dog Shirt should look something like this:
My husband, Chuy, and I spent the afternoon at the beach after we finished his shirt. I think it makes the perfect cover up for Chuy . . . dont ya think?! Here’s a few pics from our adventure!

Very cute idea! I was looking for a patriotic shirt for yesterday’s World Cup match but couldn’t find a style I liked. I think I’ll make my own now that I’ve found your tutorial, and maybe one for Niles too! 🙂
