Just in time for the 2012 London Olympics, Chuy and I have made this easy and free DIY pet project that you can create for your Irresistible Pets! These Olympic Rings are a chew toy will keep your dog occupied while you’re glued into the TV cheering for Team USA!!! (or your favorite team, if you’re reading this outside the USA!). This toy goes perfectly with our Olympic Medal Dog Treat.
Materials Needed
- 5 old shirts or rags in the following colors: Blue, Black, Red, Yellow, Green
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Rubber Bands (optional)
Time Required
- 60 to 90 minutes
Instructions
These instructions are based on the Olympic Ring dog toy that I created in this picture. If you want to learn more, keep reading!
Step 1 – Cut the Strips
Begin by cutting 3 strips, about 25 inches long/1 inch wide from each color of shirt. That’s 15 strips in total. This is exactly the same process as I used in my tutorial, DIY Dog Rope.
Keep them separate by color, as I did with mine:
Step 2 – Knot the Top of Your Strips
Separate your strips by color and then and loosely tie a knot at the top each one. You should have 5 “rings” ready to braid after this. You can also use a rubber band to do this.
You’ll want to keep the fabric loose so that you can tie it to the other end after you’re done braiding it.
Step 3 – Braid the Strips
Start braiding each strip, from the knot down. Leave some excess fabric at the ends to tie your “ring” together. Again, refer to my tutorial DIY Dog Rope for this step.
Do NOT tie the rings together yet! You need to wait until ALL of them are completed!!
Step 4 – Tie the Blue Ring
The blue ring is the first in formation and you need to tie this one together first.
Step 5 – Make a Chain and Connect the Rings
Once the blue ring is done, lay out the other rings as shown below. Then you can begin to tie them. The key is tying them to each other, so that they literally form a chain when complete.
Once everything is done, your DIY Olympic Ring Dog Toy should look something like this:
These were a hit at my house! Chuy loves them and is ready to cheer on Team USA at the 2012 London Olympics!!
