I write all the time how Chuy taught me how to start living an irresistible life. Chuy was my inspiration to quit a job that was slowly killing me to pursue my dreams. He’s taught me so much about life and about myself. I’m a better person because of this little dog that only cares about one thing; living in the now. I’m a big believer that in order to create an irresistible life you have to first start breaking the rules that are holding you back. I think of these “rules” as negative beliefs that you tell yourself. It’s true. Your thoughts become your reality. They can have so much power over you which is why it’s important to break the negative rules and rewrite your own.
So what does this have to do with dogs? Well dogs are constantly teaching us how to break the rules. Here are five lessons we can learn from them.
1. Dogs Don’t Care What They Look Like
A dog would never give up the opportunity to go for a walk because they’re having a bad hair day. A dog would never turn down a romp on the beach because they feel too fat. As humans, we do this all the time. I know I’ve wasted a lot of my life waiting to lose the next 50 lbs. When you put that into the perspective of a dog, it all seems so trivial and ridiculous. Don’t wait for the weight. Get outdoors and start living your life now . . . at any size, any weight, or any age.
2. Dogs Don’t Talk Negatively About Themselves
Ok, we don’t really know what goes on in the brain of a dog or if they “talk” to themselves. I’m pretty sure if they do, dogs never talk negatively of themselves. Just imagine your dog telling themselves, “Chuy, you’re such an idiot. Why did you fetch the ball like that? You look so stupid. Oh and why did you eat 3 extra treats. You’re such a fat pig. No wonder you can’t fit into any of your doggie shirts.”
SEE what I mean?! We humans do this ALL the time. Would you want to be friends with your inner voice? If the answer is no, you have some to work to do.
3. Dogs Never Give Up on the First Try
I’ve sat in complete awe watching Chuy try to do something like grab his toy that’s on top of the table or find the treats hidden in a puzzle. You can see the wheels spinning in his head. He tries one way and if it doesn’t work, he doesn’t give up. He’ll try repeatedly until he accomplishes what he’s trying to do. Imagine if we lived our life like that! As humans it’s easy to let the “rules” or negative beliefs take over your thoughts and discourage you from going after your dreams. Take a lesson from our dogs, don’t give up until you get the treat.
4. Dogs Don’t Care What Anyone Thinks
Dogs just do. They don’t hesitate by wasting time worrying about what all the other dogs might think. I mean these are the creatures that hump and sniff strangers butts. I’m not suggesting you do that! But, imagine if you never worried what anyone else thought about you? How much closer to your dreams would you be?
5. Dogs Don’t Need Permission for Happiness
This has to be the most ridiculous human concept to dogs. Dogs don’t have happiness guilt. They are happy because they want to be. They don’t have to prove anything to anyone. Show them a ball? Pure happiness. Ask them to go for a walk? Tails wagging.
If you feel like you need permission to be truly happy, I’ll give it to you if that helps but you don’t need it. Life is too short to stifle your happiness because of some BS rules you’re living by.
