In today’s post, I have a very special guest, Mimi. If you’re a long time reader, you’ve probably seen her in some of our other posts from time to time. Mimi is Chuy’s cousin and she’s half Chihuahua, half Yorkie . . .and she’s literally the sweetest dog I’ve ever met! We had an opportunity to partner with PetSmart® Grooming to check out their services and Chuy wanted to invite Mimi.
We’ve been there several times in the past with Chuy but only to get the occasional Pawdicure since Chuy’s hair is so short and doesn’t require much grooming. Mimi has long hair thanks to her Yorkie side, so I took her for a day of pampering at PetSmart since she is much more high maintenance than Chuy . . . at least in the grooming department!
I have to admit I’m always nervous about leaving our babies with anyone other than family. Having a groomer you can trust is really important! In this post, I’m going to share some tips to help make your pet look and feel irresistible at their next grooming appointment.
Do Your Research
I’m a huge fan of googling and doing research before I do anything . . . especially when it comes to the well being of Chuy or Mimi as they are family! If you’re like me, you want to know that the person you’re leaving your dog with is qualified. I was happy to learn that all PetSmart salon associates acquire annual safety certification and take additional course-work where they learn about dog anatomy, signs of stress and common pet medical conditions. Plus, their groomers (those that give haircuts) receive an additional 400 hours of hands-on training.
Book An Appointment
It’s best to book your grooming appointment in advance so that you can schedule your day around it. I love that you can book all of your appointments online with PetSmart . . . and you can even specify which groomer! They will send you text messages or emails notifying you when your pet is ready to go home. Make sure that your pet has a current rabies vaccine with proof of vaccination from the vet upon arrival at your appointment.
Ask Lots of Questions!
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always asked a ton of questions. I was that annoying kid that just had to know WHY the sky is blue. As an adult, I haven’t changed but and my inquisitive nature actually comes in handy sometimes! Don’t be afraid to ask your groomer lots of questions. It is their job to make you and your pet feel at ease.
Mimi had a bad experience in the past where a groomer nicked her skin. I explained all of this to the PetSmart Grooming staff and they put my fears at ease. They took really good care of her and she looked totally irresistible when they were done.
Mimi’s Experience at PetSmart Grooming
Nichole, our groomer at PetSmart was so kind and patient with Mimi. We went over all of the services that she would be receiving so that we were all on the same page. This is a before pic of Mimi and as you can tell she was ready for her day at the salon!
Mimi had the Bath with Haircut service which includes:
- Oxygen-infused bath
- Shampoo washing & blow dry
- 15 mins. or more of brushing
- Dematting & haircut
- Nail trim
- Ear cleaning, hair removal & flushing (if needed)
- Scissoring feet & pad shaving
- Sanitary trim
- Anal gland cleaning
We added on the Top Dog Plus package which includes:
- Choice of premium shampoo
- Milk bath conditioner
- Scented cologne spritz
- Teeth brushing & breath freshener
- Nail Grinding
- Bandana or bow
- Normally this appointment may take a few hours, so be prepared to drop your pet off. Since we were there so early, our wait time was really short. You can watch your pet through the salon window but you are not able to come into the grooming area for safety reasons.
- At the end of the appointment, Mimi received a “Pawgress Report” that details all of the services that were provided along with notes from the groomer.
Before and After . . .
We were really pleased with how Mimi looked after her day of pampering. She got a full body hair cut with a Teddy Bear face trim. She even got a purple bow to show off her new hair cut! She is so cute! Sorry, not sorry Chuy!!
With her new hair cut, you can really see both her Chihuahua and Yorkie characteristics!
I think these before and after pics speak for themselves. Mimi is looking irresistible and we can now see her beautiful brown eyes! What do you think of Mimi’s before and after?

She looks good. Her hair is like Bailie’s before hair, all standing up and wild.

The before-and-after comparison is amazing, I kind of prefer the fluffy and shaggy look in the body and generally don’t have them shave much off, and then trim around the legs and eyes, and shorten the hair around the eyes and mouth. Mimi looks adorable with that little bow!

Mimi is adorable! She looks great after her grooming. We have been trusting PetSmart with Nelly and Sophie for many years and have never had a problem.

I haven’t been the best at keeping our dog groomed all the time, but after seeing the effect a simple haircut can have, I want to change my ways. I love the sound of having all of those great things done, especially the nail trimming. The before and after photos are awesome as well, I think I’d like to get my dogs haircut done as soon as possible now!

My wife and I have one dog and she absolutely loves to be groomed. She always gets really excited when she sees me pick up the brush and I totally agree when you say it promotes quality time. I have been thinking about some more heavy duty dog grooming here in Clayton, NC and maybe getting some tips on what else I can do. Thanks for the tips!
