January 2011 marks the 10th annual observance of Adopt-A-Rescued-Bird month.
The ASPCA originally proclaimed January as the official Adopt-A-Rescued-Bird month in 2002 to encourage bird-lovers to consider adopting a pet bird instead of buying one from a pet store.
Birds are wonderful companions but they are just as much work as any other pet. I should know. I grew up with birds from parakeets, finches, cockateils, and love birds. Don’t be fooled just because they live most of their life in a cage. They crave social interaction with you AND time outside of the cage. I recommend reading this article from Pet Finder before adopting, 10 Things You Should Know Before Adopting a Bird. The article includes useful tips like this one:
“Birds are active and inquisitive and must be provided with ample room to move about and play. An indoor or sheltered outdoor aviary or a flight safe room (windows covered, no cats/dogs, no ceiling fans, etc.) that will allow the bird(s) to fly is good for exercise. Birds with clipped wings can get exercise by climbing, swinging, and flapping, if provided with ample space, toys, and climbing structures.”
