This cold winter weather has me day dreaming of paddling around the water, sipping a margarita on a warm day. Last year I absolutely fell in love with kayaking! I NEVER thought I would say that. What’s even more irresistible? I can take Chuy with us so I don’t have to leave him at home. It’s such a fun and relaxing way to spend time together, enjoy nature, and burn a few calories!
I’ve put together my top must have gear for kayaking with a Chihuahua . . . or any small dog! Check out more of our Chihuahua Tips here.
Life Jacket
A life jacket is the most important piece of gear you need to kayak with your Chihuahua. I would never take Chuy out on the water without one. Sometimes you can find them in-store at places like PetSmart or boating stores. The best bet is to order the life jacket online. I actually found Chuy’s life jacket at a discounted price on Doggy Loot.
Blanket & Towels
I have a sit in kayak so Chuy sits in between my legs. Since the kayak is hard I always bring a blanket or towel for Chuy to lay on top of. An extra towel can also come in handy if you or your dog get wet.
Harness & Leash
Even though Chuy wears a life jacket I keep his harness and leash on. I never tie the leash to my kayak or my vest. I put the leash holder under my leg. I do this so that if for some reason we flipped over, Chuy can swim away and not get trapped.
Collar with ID
This might go without saying but I never leave the house without Chuy’s collar and ID on. Yes, especially out on the water!
Bottled Water
We kayak in salt water which is not what you want your dog to drink! Always bring along a water bottle or two for both you and your pup!
Collapsible Bowl
I also bring along a collapsible water bottle that attaches to the leash so Chuy can drink water.
Food & Treats
It’s a great idea to bring along some treats for your dog. They come in handy if you need to keep your dog calm or if you’re going to be out for awhile. Kayaking burns a lot of energy! Especially if you go onshore and do some walking.
First Aid Kit
I keep a first aid kit in my kayak at all times. I actually had to use it last year when I cut my toe on an oyster shell. You should have the basics for your dog in the first aid kit in case of an emergency.
Phone/GPS
My phone is something I always take kayaking. . . especially with Chuy! A phone is your lifeline on the water! Plus, that’s how I take pics while out on the water! I have a waterproof case that I can wear around my neck. I love to use a cardio tracker with a GPS to track where we go and to see how many calories I burn! Before I head out I like to check in on Facebook so my family knows where I am in case something were to happen. If you’re going to be out all day, I recommend bringing a backup battery like a Mophie.

We’re the very happy new parents of two Chihuahua rescues – a father and daughter – from a puppy mill. While we have two other dogs, having Chi’s are, well, different! Never thought I’d be a Chi lover but, alas, I’ve fallen hard for my two babies. So, the title of this post made me smile. Kayaking with a Chihuahua…I’d never thought of it. But, why not? An informative post as those up north and out west start yearning for those warm days and nights.
Now, if I could just get my Chi’s to agree to take a dip in the pool…They hate water! LOL
Thanks so much, Aimee. Definitely sharing this one.

Jody,
Congrats on your new Chi babies! How blessed they are to have you. Chis are so much fun. Chuy hates actually getting in the water too!

Yay for dog kayaking! Nice write up too. There’s a lot to consider when taking your pooch out for a paddle and you covered everything! They just provide so much entertainment!

We have 7 dogs, 4 chihuahuas. We have taken them all hiking before but I have wanted to take one or two kayaking. Thank you for the tips. We practically have a backpack alone for dog stuff when we hike 🙂

Wow, you have your hands full! I love kayaking with my Chihuahua! I know the feeling about a separate bag for all the dog stuff lol

Great advice. I have not taken any dogs kayaking before, but definitely sounds like a fun idea.
