I have a confession to make. As much as I know dental health is important, I don’t do a good job of brushing Chuy’s teeth. Mostly because Chuy turns into a demon anytime I try to put my finger in his mouth! I have been working with him over the past few months to get more comfortable with a tooth brush and it’s slowly but steadily working! Chuy desperately needs a new dental health routine because his breath is quite funky and dental health is important to a pet’s overall health. Oh and let’s face it, clean breath is critical when taking selfies and smooching your pooch!
Chuy’s bad breath concerns me because bad breath is often one of the first signs of oral disease. I was blown away to learn that 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of periodontal disease by age three.Yikes! Chuy did have a dental cleaning by his vet a few years ago but I know we need to get him into a daily routine for long lasting results because left untreated, oral disease can seep into the blood stream and cause serious health risks.

I need to get better at brushing the fluffies’ teeth. We used the Tropiclean water additive before, but Mauja the diva wouldn’t drink the water then. I’m interested in trying some of their other products though.

I have read where the Flouride Additive is not necessarily a good thing for the dog. Its not as if dogs swish their water around in their mouth. I have seen the chicken flavored toothpaste, where the owner lets the dog lick the toothpaste off the toothbrush to get used to the flavor, then once the dog is used to the brush, start brushing one area, then another. Rest, then go back and do the others. The toothpaste is like a treat to the dog, so over time, I am sure you could turn the dog’s teeth back into what their mama gave them. I have seen a neat toothbrush that has bristles on 3 sides, so you just move the brush back and forth down the dog’s teeth.
